Advancing Social Justice Through Public Service: Lessons from California

Are you concerned about social inequality? Come find out how public service careers contribute to the advancement of social justice. Apply to attend this fully funded 3-day student development conference at UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs for exposure to public service careers that equip participants to play a pivotal role in addressing nagging social problems. Be prepared to meet and engage with highly effective professionals in California. You will explore Los Angeles with experts on field visits.

Highlights of the conference include:

Exposure to Careers Key for Advancing Social Justice: Over the weekend participants will meet trailblazing leaders from a variety of public service careers that will share their experiences. This will be an opportunity to better understand how to harness your passion for tackling social problems into a career in public affairs while developing key skills to fight real world problems.

Engage and Network with Effective Leaders: Workshops provide opportunities to meet peers, faculty, community change agents and alum working professionally in public service careers.

Learn tips for Applying to Graduate School: Opportunities to connect with graduate school admissions specialists as well as current public affairs students to gain insights into successful graduate school applications.

Develop Skills for Advancing Social Justice: Experiential learning opportunities with change agents in the field will inspire you to use more effective strategies for addressing social problems. Participants engage in relevant policy discussions and introduce leadership skills needed in the public sector. A dynamic group exercise introduces strategies to transform ideas for social justice advancement into strategic plans for social change.

Who is eligible to apply?

•Rising university and community college undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors are welcome to apply. All majors with an interest in pursuing graduate degrees and careers in public affairs will be considered.

•Students who reside in the continental Pacific region and bordering states should apply (including California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado).

•Traditionally underrepresented students are strongly encouraged to apply.

A transportation stipend, housing, and meals will be provided. Local applicants must provide housing.
